If I recall, that legislation was rammed through Parliament despite being extremely unpopular because of the opposite, passionate pride most Canadians felt for the Red Ensign.
The flag persists because whole generations have come and gone since then, so Canadians are used to the Maple Leaf over the Red Ensign.
Same with Canadians saying happy Canada Day over happy Dominion Day!
Americans now say happy 4rth of July instead of happy Independence Day.
I would be angry if Congress changed Old Glory. Like the Red Ensign, she has been added to, but never replaced.
In wartime, flag bearers carried her into battle. When she was dropped, she was picked up again, often at great peril, in order to remain waving.
Jerks who change such cherished symbols of their nation such as her flag are unkind to their forefathers and ancestors. Their legacy is that of leaving their nation that greater a dearth of heritage. Shame!
