If that's the standard then I'd assume Islam today is far less brutal than it was back in the Spanish Inquisition days. I'm also not convinced the Spanish Inquisition was upholding core Christian values. That seems more like powerful people using Christianity to justify doing authoritarian things in the name of Christianity in order to gain the moral high ground for public support.
