The national debt is not the same thing as private debt. National debt is merely government spending that hasn't been taxed. The limiting factor with running up the national debt is inflation. This is why Zimbabwe, Argentina, Venezuela, etc. ran into problems. Money printing is basically like diluting stocks in a company by issuing new shares but selling those new shares for free. At least when companies sell new shares, there is some sort of financial backing behind those new shares.
