It's taken from a collection of photos posted on 4chan. Some nut on there keeps posting images of supermarket prices in the far North and claiming that necessities in Canada are unaffordable.
I've never seen a whole chicken for that price, but usually nearly a third of it. Chicken breasts usually ~$10-12. I'm not saying it's not stupid, but the images are clearly not indicative of real costs.
To anyone claiming that the prices are over the top, let me list regular prices (not on promo) for meat in QC and ON cities:
Beef Steak: 30-60$/kg-
Stewing beef: 20-25$/kg-
Chicken breast: 12-16$/kg-
Chicken thighs: 5-10$/kg-
Whole chicken: 11-16$/kg-
Lamb (overall) 27-60$/kg-
Butter: 4-6$/lb-
Vegetables and fruits are expensive and mostly tasteless.
We're one of the top food producers and exporters in the world and anyone claiming that foodstuff that's produced here (beef, chicken, pork, milk products, vegetables) is a luxury is a completely financially illiterate moron.
On top of that, we get fruits, veggies and meat from the USA by train, truck and sea which is another of the world's top producers and despite the crappy value of the looney, USA beef is always cheaper (in QC and ON).
Canadians are some of the most house-horny, financially illiterate morons you can find. This example shows how truly pathetic government policies and people's attitudes towards real estate has been. Real estate is >60% of Canada's GDP. Think about that. Banana Republics are above us as Canada is not even a real country it's a british colony.
Seeing the pain and look of failure / fear and sadness on their faces when my suburban boomer family member and his family moved in to the 'hood where I have lived MY type of rough life was just great.
Especially the matriarch of the family who "shushed" everything I've said for years.

Beer prices are pretty close to Manitoba prices, depends exactly what you're getting of course. As Lucky or Keystone are cheap and for a good reason.
