Atkins ruined the life of his female home invasion victim and the judge gives him a slap on the wrist and a slap in the face to the victim. Atkins has made positive improvements in his behaviour and is proud of receiving 18 high school credits, his lawyer Brian Dube said.

Before sentencing the youths, visiting Justice Bruce Thomas noted they had more firepower than the Windsor police who rescued the couple.

“You each have made some strides in custody, which I would not have predicted,” Thomas told the teens as they stared at their shoes.

“You each made use of education and therapy,” Thomas said. “Where you go from here is up to you. You need to take to heart my comments.”

Thomas said he had to take into account the long delays in the cases because the Young Offenders Act calls for “timely intervention.” He also considered that in the past six months the teens had spent at least 20 days being transferred to Windsor for court appearances or between detention facilities.

Thomas recognized Liles in his comments and said she’s suffered a loss of home, relationship and a normal life.

“I hope this sentence gives you some peace of mind and you are able to get on with your life,” he said before he banned the young men from entering Essex County during the three-year probationary period.

Liles appeared inconsolable after the hearing. She said sarcastically that she was glad the gang members got an education and therapy because she had to drop out of school, pay for therapy and has lost income attending court.
