Woe great comment. Glad Im not the only one who hates the direction the game has taken post the 2004 lockout. Getting rid of the two line pass rule was a huge mistake, and none of these changes acrually brought about an increase in goals per game. It did for a few years but eventually the number of goals per game dropped back to pre-2004 levels, which were the lowest in history. Yet people still shit on me on reddit for suggesting that we should bring back the two line pass.
I fucking hate 3 on 3 OT and the shootout as well. They have turned the regular season into a totally different sport than the playoffs. I dont think its a coincidence that both 12th place seeds were able to knock off the 5th place seeds in the qualifying round. The regular season rewards shitty top-heavy teams. Montreap is actually a very good 5-on-5 team but they get raped in the regular season due to OT being 3 on 3. The 12th place teams were clearly not as bad as people thought, and its not only because of parity, but because the playoffs are a different beast altogether.
When the two line pass existed, made the neutral zone important and it also made for stylistic differences in attacks. Once they got rid of that, it just became end-to-end hockey which makes for less of a build-up to a goal and less of an emotional experience when one gets scored.
Don't get me started on 3 on 3 OT and shootouts. They're fucking bullshit, even more crap that makes for better highlights while ruining the game itself.
Yep, and all of these rules punish defensive teams and defensive defensemen, as well as teams that invested large portions of their salary cap to defense and goalies. Even the way they structured the Vegas expansion draft, the rules around how many forwards and how many defensemen you could protect also punished teams that had 3-4 defensive superstars, instead of just 1-2. The entire thing is always about increasing goals and encouraging highlight reel moments, with complete disrespect or even outright contempt for old school hockey.
I agree completely.
