I am going to be moving from Alberta to Metro Vancouver. Can anyone from around there advise on what areas are the least shitty? I currently live downtown in one of the big Alberta cities and I am tired of the homeless and drug addicts. I want to pick somewhere in BC that will be good to raise a family and low on crime.
I have been looking at Tsawwassen, Ladner, White Rock, North Vancouver. Are any of these places decent? Commute doesn’t really matter to me as I’ll work from home often. There is a chance I will be working either downtown or in south surrey. Any input is appreciated.
Abbotsford, anywhere away from the city
I figure if I’m gonna go out there I’m gonna make sure it’s right by the water.
Why the fuck would you want to live in Vancouver? There is literally no-where "good to raise a family and low on crime" in Vancouver.
Live literally anywhere else in the province. For the price of a leaky-condo in Vancouver you could own an acreage on a nice lake and your own personal float-plane and commute right into Coal Harbour for the handful of times you need to do high-end banking or whatever.
"I am tired of the homeless and drug addicts....">
Then don't move here this is where Alberta sends all it's hard cases the streets, parks & alleyways here literally teem with crazy druggies.
And from what I've seen the rest of BC is no better.
Could you rely on these ferries to get to the mainland as part of a commute to work? I don’t have any idea how long they are or what the routing would be.
Thanks for your input. It is fucking depressing looking at what I’ll get in that area for six or seven hundred thousand, compared to Alberta.
What is a good rentAl ad site out there? I use rent faster but it seems to not have any listings around Vancouver
Ok great. You are the man, thanks.
Not sure how often you'd need to go into downtown Van, but it's it's a fairly rare occurrence (like once or twice a month), have you thought of living somewhere on the Island? Not dirt cheap by any stretch, but cheaper than the Lower Mainland.
I would need to go at least a couple of times per week. I don’t know if I could rely on a ferry as part of my commute.
Fair enough. There are people that do it a couple times per week, but it's expensive and time consuming. Couple times per month sure, but not every week.
How long would it take you to get downtown Vancouver and back home during work time rush hours? Also, is the weather as good there as in the other more southern areas? I ask because I was hoping to drive my sports car year round when I move out.
That’s crazy expensive for a top floor. Budget would allow for it but it’s not very appealing at all.
You can still get a nice place in East Maple ridge (whonnock) last I lived near there, for a decent price. It is country living 15 mind away from Maple ridge and 50 min from Van. I wish I had bought there in the mid 2000s....

So that explains why southern Vancouver is so much more affordable in comparison to other parts of Vancouver city proper.
Mission maybe? Is the train into Van still running?
Unfortunately no way to avoid it. I’ll have to drive to either downtown Vancouver OR south surrey 2-3 times a week for work. Not sure which yet.
