The wealthy got even more wealthy during the lockdown and the small businesses and working class got absolutely decimated by shut down and restrictions of non-essential business. If this is a "socialist" coup, it is a tremendous failure. $2000/month before tax CERB is not a replacement for a job. $2000/month before taxes is not a lot of money. You can make more by working. And a long history of unemployment can make it next to impossible for you to get a job in the future. So many businesses (including small businesses) have permanently shut down due to the financial losses. So we are going to have mass unemployment for awhile. So there is a higher cost to sitting on CERB/EI for a long time than you think.
What we are witnessing is not socialism but a population of NPCs responding with a disproportionate amount of irrational fear towards the actual threat posed by the virus. My family is all fucking terrified doomers. Including my boomer dad with cancer who is deathly afraid of catching the virus. Even though the survival rate for men in their 70s who aren't nursing home residents is now over 99% as the virus mutated to be weaker.
This pandemic is far less serious than the 1918 H1N1 pandemic. We blew our load over this shit? What happens when we have a real pandemic? Yes SARS-COV-2 killed more than the 2018 flu (the most nasty flu we had in a long time) but it is still a far, far cry from 1918 H1N1. We gonna torpedo our economy and our livelihoods over this? Sweden had among the most lax COVID restrictions and only 0.0583% of their population died from COVID. In any given year, probably 1.2% of Sweden's non-immigrant population dies. 1/82.31 years life expectancy = 1.2%.
Agreed. And they’ve also realized that socialist rhetoric can be applied without actually going through with any major social change. They still get to line their pockets. We’re beginning to follow China’s example

A better wording would be an Authoritarian coup. Authoritarianism has little to do with economics
