The oil is so thick and dirty it has to be diluted with light sweet crude just to be pumped through a pipeline. Quality is low. America, Russia, Arabia, and everyone else in the world is pumping so much oil that there's no place to put it. The future of oil sands looks grim.
That combined with the wuflu. Unless you really like living in Edmonton or Calgary there's no reason to stay.

Actually places like CNRL Horizons produce high grade synthetic with most sulphur removed and sold as a product.
Also they create a dry coker ash product used for firing smelters in china.
