Strict lockdowns and school closures could end up increasing the coronavirus death toll in the long run, a new study has found. Shutting down the spread of the virus only helps to prevent deaths if a vaccine can be found quickly, academics at the University of Edinburgh claim.
According to the study, lockdowns can help to relieve pressure on hospitals but also serve to prolong a virus outbreak – potentially leading to more deaths later on as fewer people will have built up immunity.
