He gets to maintain the illusion that the PPC is a legitimate party actually running in elections, which keeps the donation cheques rolling in (as long as his supporters aren't smart enough to cue in to the fact that he's running in by-elections he knows he can never win).
From those donations he pays himself $100k a year as his "party leader" salary.
And as a fringe benefit, he gets to deny the CPC another seat and laugh at them (and Canada) while he rolls around in the cash he bilked his chump supporters out of.
This is like trying to convince scientologists that L. Ron Hubbard was a fraud and they're being taken for a ride. They're completely oblivious to the evidence all around them, and they're completely immune to reason. Indeed they react to reason and evidence with hostility and vitriol.
Cons up in York right now is a great sign! Max has 3.9%...
Which will gain him nothing, but could very well hand the Liberals a seat.
As someone who voted PPC, i agree, I questioned why Max would run in this seat when he had no chance.
This.

Because this whole PPC thing was only ever about hurting the CPC. Petty revenge for not giving him the big chair. That much should be obvious by now.
Run candidates where the vote isn’t splittable. Running a candidate in Toronto serves only his ego.
Besides. What if a PPC actually wins? Does max take their seat, or do they become leader?
Good point.
May’s not much of a leader though, to be fair.
