I just finished reading a book by Peter Hathaway Capstick, it was about famous hunters back in the 1800's. One that stuck out to me was Walter Bell. At age twelve he decided he didn't want to go to school anymore and to attain/finance his ambitions of becoming a professional hunter in Africa he became an apprentice sailor on a cargo vessel heading from his native Scotland towards Australia......at age 12!
Fast forward to the modern world where there was a huge lawsuit on the news in Vancouver because some parent had the nerve to let his kids use the public bus.....without supervision! Thankfully the father won that utterly ridiculous case.
Yep. Viking youth were expected to go on raids as early as age 12. Even as recently as the 1940s our youth were storming beaches and facing certain death (like Dieppe)
Today most guys don't even change the oil in their car...
The father had spent two years training the eldest four of his five children, all between the ages of 7 and 10 at the time, how to take the bus to help them be more independent.
