Because back then people spoke to each other in such a way that if someone wanted to listen in they would have to be apart of the conversation or evesdrop close by. Now the only way people communicate is by way that nearly anyone can listen in and those with incentive can learn of your wear abouts and ensure that if you were considering doing such a thing as you describe, you are quickly and quietly removed from the conversation.
