No it isn’t because of the patriarchy, it’s because Latin had masculine, feminine, and neuter like many indo european languages. In the vulgar latin period most of the neuter went either masculine or feminine, because of a multitude of factors, mostly being that language education doesn’t matter so much in dark age Europe
