I personally don't have a problem with voting machines if, AND ONLY IF, they have a paper trail.
I also love the idea of a receipt that the voter can check post election to make sure their vote was counted, such as is outlined in this gentleman's TED talk. (Though I'm not a fan of his particular method, but I do like the concept.)
