Something's fishy there. According to that, Sweden has about three times the cases per capita, with twice the death. However, all the numbers in the past 24 hours for Sweden are zero, which makes no sense (you can't have an active case total and then have zero recoveries.)
If there were 24 hour totals, I'd like to see those.
Fair enough, but without that data, people could very easily point to the higher case and death per capita total and say "See, masks and social distancing work." On its face, that doesn't look convincing.
No it doesn't. It has a lower death rate per case.
The rate per 100K is the second box below the big number: 65 for Canada, 131 for Sweden (or just over double.)
I know Canada's death rate will be higher partly because we are killing the most elderly! We have the worst long term care numbers out of all the richest countries. Since covid kills mainly those over 65, that's another factor in this chart I originally posted. https://www.cihi.ca/sites/default/files/document/impact-covid-19-long-term-care-canada-first-6-months-report-en.pdf I'm all for protecting the vulnerable to the extent they wish to be protected. Our health care systems sucks on a good day, with ICU's running at 90% at times without covid. https://secure.cihi.ca/free_products/ICU_Report_EN.pdf ( and more stats) http://www.hqontario.ca/Portals/0/Documents/pr/measuring-up-2018-en.pdf Government is fucking us left right and centre. Instead of lockdowns and CERB government should be bolstering hospitals and let things play out with reopening fully.
...Sweden has 10 million people
yup but their population density is 22.71 people per square Km and Canada is 3.81 per sq. km. So they have a lower population AND a smaller landmass. So being packed in tighter together means they are doing much better than us without killing their economy and suffering the other unintended outcomes of covid mandates.
Density is an average across landmass, I understand Toronto/GTA is the main population hub. But these number are correct. Honestly regardless of that fact, Canadians should be allowed to make a risk assessments for themselves. Obviously you can think critically. So you should with covid risk. The role of the government should give guidelines and science to the people and let them make choices needed to protect their family. Bolster hospitals/ICU's, focus on protecting the vulnerable to the extent in which they wish to be protected and open up Canada. I think when we see other countries or states reopen fully we can have a better comparison than Sweden and Canada. Even so, Sweden has Stockholm and surrounding area which houses over 2 million. So I don't think it's a completely unfair comparison.
Also, even if the density sits at 20-25 in GTA, (Average 22.5 just by your numbers) that still sits about the same as Sweden and they have roughly the same numbers without the mandates. That should have been at the beginning of my response. The mandates are not significant enough to warrant repeated lockdowns. They do more damage than good. Especially when it's a lockdown province wide when you know damn well the population is highest in T.O
Yeah, there are a ton of variables with every country, would be hard to match them completely. Remember that these correlations work both ways too with determining the restrictions on populations as well as pushing to lift them. If only those making the rules considered that. Our global response was based on China, and talk about apples and oranges. And as a little joke, apples and oranges are still fruit. If I find a better comparison I will post about it and probably make reference to the original post. I enjoy the discussions regardless and love to see people thinking.
Totally agree with your statements here.
