The reality is that when given money to do little or nothing people do exactly that and stop trying. They become generationally dependent rather than being forced to find work and success elsewhere.
UBI will simply encourage people to stagnate rather than through destination take up options they don't want to do but might find they actually excel at. I have moved numerous times in my life to seek opportunity and have found that often while job prospects were bleak in my first choice of places they were plentiful elsewhere.
Without the insane EI programs on the east coast people would have left and moved to Manitoba and Saskatchewan which have had very strong employment numbers. EI kept people in Toronto while Hamilton depopulated and southern Ontario saw limited growth.
UBI might 'help' people but at the cost of removing the major driving force that might force them to change their lives for the better and actually have a lasting impact. UBI prevents people at the bottom from taking the chances needed to get somewhere. UBI is a disincentive for those at the bottom to make hard choices that can actually help them.
We have tried UBI under different names a few times and in a few different locations and it has been an utter failure.
