I've been a spiritual seeker for over 20 years now and churches are still baffling to me, especially Christian churches. Most people go for a sense of community and have very little spiritual spark in them, but they will profess to believe nonetheless. I'm all for community, and it would be so much richer if people got together around things they actually believed in, rather than what they're pressured to say they believe in.
Small town churches are fine, though. But there's something about urban churches that is incredibly disingenuous, superficial, empty. The people who go to them tend not to know each other at all outside of church. It's not community.
