He reminds me of King Zedekiah in the Old Testament. That king was weak, indecisive, tried to appease all of the neighboring kingdoms at the same time. All that got him was his kingdom seized by Babylon, his family executed, his eyes gouged out and left in a ditch.
One thing about the other parties - their positions may be wicked but they are upheld with conviction and resolve. At least they stand by their ethical systems, however occult and disturbing those may be.
Later on in the good book doesn't Christ say he would rather you be hot or cold, but the lukewarm get vomited out...
