Filet is a tenderloin with some of the crap removed, otherwise it’s a fair comparison though the price per kilo at the local stores is usually closer to R$30 / kg (about USD $6). Check out the website of Pao De Acucar for example. This is the leading grocery chain in SP.
Beef is very widely eaten in Brazil. More so than in Canada. But preferred cuts are somewhat different. While filet is a prime cut everywhere it is not sought out as much here.
Picanha is highly sought after, and other cuts such as fraldihna, bife ancho (from Uruguay and Argentina), contra file etc. Most diners (lanchonette’s and padarias) will have a basic steak lunch for $4-5.
BBQ restaurants are very popular in many parts of the country and the southern neighbors.
In addition, the beef is very tasty. If you get a chance, and you are a beef eater, make a trip one day to Brazil and Argentina. You will not be disappointed.
Now I’m hungry.
You are very welcome.
I may be a random internet guy but I’ve been on this site for a while.
I’m a Canadian. I live in South East Asia but spend a lot of time in Brazil and Canada because of family.
I am now in Brazil but I’ll be traveling to Canada next month for a while.
My continued interest in Canada stems from my desire not to see it fall apart because of poor governance.
Good luck!
