The metric that matters how well the vaccine is preventing infected people from dying is the number of covid deaths per day, and right now we're at 36 deaths a day whereas on 9 Oct 2020 we were at 23 deaths a day.
Look at it this way then: we have 70% more cases per day of more transmissible and virulent versions of the virus, while only 60% more deaths.
You aren't one of these people who think the vaccines should be 100% effective against catching the virus, are you? It's a global pandemic after all. People are gonna die.
