It's late I know, but I'm getting my PAL and RPAL classes and test next week and I'm wondering how long I have to get a few firearms in my possession before they're either bought up and unavailable, or new legislation is announced that makes getting the ones I need (I'm aiming for a shotgun and SKS to start) impossible? Am I too late or just in time?

As far as I know the SKS isn't on the no-no list. Also, I don't think that you know what is coming.
Not only will the government ban about 1,500 "assault style" rifles, they will also introduce red flag laws. It only takes a single person to rat you out and a review of your gun license will be triggered. And if they find that you own an illegal weapon, you will lose your license.
I'm aware of the "assault style" ban from last year, is this an additional one?
Not as far as I see, but could change any moment as always with the Liberals. Also, currently the ownership isn't banned of these 1,500 "assault style" rifles.
Also start with a handgun. You won't be defending your home with a SKS from an intruder.
There is definitely no point in using a firearm to defend my home in Canada, I'd be in jail in no time. I have... other things for home defense. ;)
This is more for me to become a good shooter, and to have what I need incase things ever really go to shit.
Don't let anyone know you have a gun unless you trust them with your life.
This is a comment everyone needs to put thought into. Being known to have guns makes you a target of crime in the best of times, and especially if things were to go to shit one day. I'd love to drive around with a CCFR sticker on my car to show support, but I'd prefer to keep my gun ownership a private matter.
