Let's not forget what happened in the last few months in Australia.
The best explanation for what's going on there I heard was something along the lines of "Australians aren't just the descendants of prisoners, they're also the descendants of the guards."
Apparently there's always been an authoritarian bent to Australian culture and politics. Covid just brought it out.
