The original statement just said unmarked burials, and no where except when it was misrepresented did they claim there were mass graves.
Residential school denialism, like climate change denialism or science denialism, cherry-picks evidence to fit a conspiratorial counter-narrative. This distorts basic facts and the overall legacy of the Indian Residential School System (IRSS) to alleviate settler guilt and block important truth and reconciliation efforts.
Unmarked graves does not mean mass graves or murder. These graves were originally marked with wooden cross markers. After the Catholic mission was closed and they fell into disrepair, the Church removed the markers because it felt that it was disrespectful to have dilapidated, rotting wooden crosses. But these were not secret burials of victims.
They had been buried with respect and in fact everyone knew that this was a cemetery. The cemetery even held catholic priests and nuns.
It was only when the unmarked graves story was reported that this mass hysteria started. Then other bands got into the act and they used ground penetrating radar to find what they thought were graves.
But they weren't and there were never any secret burials or secret deaths. When children died in residential schools, which was not that common, but not unusual as a whole for all children including white kids, at a time when tb and other diseases were rampant and medical knowledge was scanty, death certificates were issued and medical examiners were involved. They tried to create a holocaust story out of these unmarked graves story.
