Corey Hurren was identified as the Canadian Armed Forces member from Bowsman, Man., who was arrested in Ottawa. Police say he was armed and had gained access to the grounds at Rideau Hall early Thursday morning.
The RCMP said Friday that Hurren faces 22 criminal charges, including careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm and uttering threats.
So he had guns and being in the armed forces had some training on how to use them. This wasn't just some hood rat that rolled up at Rideau Hall. So yes he could have done some serious damage.
Dude, if you take your .22 rifle and shoot cans at 100 feet every third weekend, you have twice the firearms training of 90% of reservist and regular armed forces personnel (excluding infantry).
And I am being generous. Annual training, with about 30 rounds per head is "some training"?
30 rounds down range is more training then a gang banger putting 50 into a stationary Tahoe during a driveby. Plus as part of his charges it lists possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm. If it was a prohibited firearm there is a possibility it could be anywhere from an AKM to a Walther PPK. In the photo from the article he is holding what looks to be C9 /C9A1/C9A2 machinegun I find it unlikely that he would take a photo with a 15lb+ gun if he had no idea how to use it, but maybe I'm wrong. Either way this wasn't some random dude that never fired a gun that just snapped.
He's a amateur. Go to any armed forces day on a base and you can get your picture taken with a C7, a fucking Leopard tank, or in the cockpit of an F-18. The training the reserves get is a joke. I don't like saying that. I was in the reserves for 2 years as a rifleman, back in the FN days. The training was a joke then, it is a joke now. If you are not an infantryman, small arms training in the CF is a joke.
I have another 28 years in the regular CF. I shoot for a hobby, I started doing IDPA competitions last year (just a beginner, really). "Serious damage" is a relative term. If you mean he could have shot somebody, I agree. Any Joe with a shotgun can do that, you don't need any training.
Serious damage? The guy is one peg below a reservist, works at the meat counter in a coop store.

I stand by my statement.
