The Wachowski brothers have been spinning it as a metaphor for becoming a troon lately. I've seen the argument pop up in a few places on the internet now. It's a pretty bold version of the "I'm a pervert too! Buy my product!" play in order to drum up interest for the next offering (which will almost certainly be gay and unwatchable).
