It's worse than that. Despite his past, he had overcome his addiction. The reason the media is pushing this narrative so hard is that he died soon after taking the COVID vaccine, so they're running these stories in an attempt to cover that up, as well as generally pushing their narrative that drug addicts can't be blamed for their problems.
