If the pro-lockdown pro-mask crowd lived in Nazi Germany, they would have supported Hitler and snitched on their neighbours and families.
I think those of us who have libertarian-leanings have some sort of oppositional defiance gene. While most people are conformists.
It amazes me how many people in the west are willing to freely give away their liberty.
Meanwhile I know black, brown and indigenous people who are the furthest thing from Tories who see all this as an infringement on their liberty. Anti-lockdown voices in the left (many "BIPOCs" I come across in Brampton and Mississauga are apolitical though) are afraid to speak up for fear that they'll be shamed for killing granny.
I was actually taking the virus seriously in March when not much was known about it. I was reading the /cvg/ threads on /pol/ back in January and February. I was wearing masks and nitrile gloves along with the Chinks (the early adopters). Some people were saying it was just the flu right from the beginning based on the data that came out of China. But I thought there were a ton of dead Chinks and that China was lying. I still think China lied about the number of tests they conducted and did far less testing than they claimed. And they probably under-counted the dead Chinks but it wasn't an apocalyptic number of deaths either. At one point I thought the millions of SIM card deactivations meant millions of dead Chinks. I was literally crying back in March thinking my dad was gonna catch COVID and die. Now I resent my dad because people like him supported the new lockdowns in Peel and Toronto.
But now that we have lots of data in the west illustrating that this is a virus where the median died with COVID age is 84, that's within the range of a flu. So being the contrarian I am, I went from being full-on doomer before everyone. And now I'm talking to my dad about the Great Barrington Declaration strategy of herd immunity while having voluntary shielding of the elderly and watching his face in horror. lol.
I took the virus seriously in Feb-March as well. In April I was largely confused, and by May I thought the whole thing was fucking stupid.
What changed?
The fatality rate going from 8-10% to .02%.
Yet when the evidence suggested that the virus was 8-10%, the government wasn't even willing to make a single fucking travel restriction... EVEN from the source country! Don't ever forget that when you're assessing the genuineness of the governments response.
Most Canadians have a blind trust in their government, media and institutions. It sounds crazy that the government would deliberately destroy the economy and destroy the lives of so many people over such a weak virus.
I think there is a Great Reset conspiracy that Trudeau, his right-hand woman Freeland, Dr. Tam and the Bank of Canada are cooking up. But even if we were to assume there was no conspiracy, a big part of what is going on is that I don't think politicians have any balls. The mainstream media and the scientists that the mainstream media trotted out were attacking Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Governor MILF (South Dakota's Governor Kristi Noem) relentlessly. They attacked Doug Ford and he cucked. They attack him some more for not cucking enough and he cucked. They still attack him anyways because they want him to cuck even more. 99+% of these politicians are bitch made. The proportion of bitch made politicians is equal to the COVID survival rate.
Jason Kenney has the most balls of any premier in Canada. And even he cucked way more than he should. There are people in the Toronto Star and blue checkmarks on Twitter calling to have Justin Trudeau force a lockdown on Alberta if Jason Kenney won't do one himself.
If the pro-lockdown pro-mask crowd lived in Nazi Germany, they would have supported Hitler and snitched on their neighbours and families.
I have peers who want to be able to snitch on the non-compliant. These are peers who I grew up with and seemed resonable.
There are probably more pro-totalitarian scums around us than we think.
My dad thinks that people who promote COVID conspiracy theories should be fined and/or imprisoned. Yet with a straight face laughs at me when I say that Canada is turning into an authoritarian police state.
The concept of liberty is lost on people. I want more restrictions than say a libertarian would want. But a lot of people are comfortable with restrictions on liberty that horrify the fuck out of me.
I'm not a "taxation is theft" kind of guy. But there is a huge difference between paying taxes and fining/throwing people in jail/executing people for promoting conspiracy theories. Yes executing. In my best Stefan Molyneux impression: If you resist arrest when you break these restrictions, you will be shot.
And at this point with the government spending money like a drunk sailor, spending a huge deficit on COVID, I am 100% in agreement with the taxation is theft people now. Even though I am not opposed to the concept of taxation and social safety nets.
I think those of us who have libertarian-leanings have some sort of oppositional defiance gene. While most people are conformists.
I don't like conflict.
But I also don't like lies. And the government has been lieing to us. In this case, my dislike of lies and authority over-reach is higher that my conflict-avoidance.
More people are probably willing to accept the "white lies" or just go along with whatever because standing up to authority and karens can be hard when you're adverse to conflict. Or people hide because they are prone to getting really mad. My dad falls in that category.
I think the people hiding because they are mad are the component of society we actually need to see right now, addressing politicians.
