Russia has had ownership of Crimea for centuries...it was only incorporated into Ukraine after the fall of the USSR and has been disputed ever since.
The way the media talked about it, it was implied that this was some new invasion of territory, where in fact Russia has more claim to the region than anyone else historically speaking.
