I was stuck in a fog much later than many of you. I was too ignorant to understand the REAL impact of 9/11. I was an adult, but I just believed the news like a good sheep.
Getting screwed over in the tech sector was a clue though, by 2012 I was forced to be a contractor working term to term. Was pissed but didn't think about it.
When Prince Justin came to power, the rest of the facade fell away. I haven't felt right since then, the closest comparison I can make is to that moment on the Truman Show when Jim Carrey's character realizes his life is fake.
I was too young to really understand what happened on 9/11 until much later. I don’t remember a world pre 9/11 either. But occasionally throughout school I would read or see something about what life was like back then, and think that something was up.
Later in university I found out that hard work and doing my best wasn’t worth fuck all. A persons skin colour could really help them along, even the biggest fuckup would be passed along if they had the right skin.
Over the past few years, seeing the quality of who we elect to be politicians has really made me think too. A lot of, if no most of, our politicians now are hacks that couldn’t make it in a normal career and are only running to be elected as it’s the best possible career they can obtain. Our politicians are no longer business leaders, scientific experts, or even regular people that started with nothing and built a life from scratch. All we get are hacks that have been opportunistic leaches for their entire careers.
And of course the final nail in the coffin has been the past year of covid horseshit.
Thought it would end with real issues, but then you realize the more the house is on fire, the more everyone worries about the bike shed. The worse things get, the more the culture war will double down on trivialities.
The dollar will be worthless and the CBC will only write about racial inequity.
My hope is for a right wing populist backlash to take out the ruling establishment. There's going to be a lot of disruptions from about 2022 to about 2030 which will pretty much burn down everything that isn't the Western World and burn down a lot of that is.
That's generally the time I think populist conservatism will be able to retake control and fix up everything.
By 2014 I was realizing there were many concerns about Canada that I had never considered. I knew there were many potential downsides for Canada, but still optimistic.
2015 things really changed quickly under Trudeau, but I still felt that we were one election away from normalcy, and most of the changes would be reversible. I went from owning 100% Canadian assets, to about 70%.
2016 - Starting to become concerned about a permeant and irreversible decline; became way more political; started talking to friends openly about concerns and realizing i'm not at all alone.
2017 - It was become clear by this point that Canada was going to be leading the SJW revolution and there were going to permanent negative changes. At this point in time I firstly started researching other countries to live in, but primarily was looking for retirement destinations where I could retire early. This is when I made dramatic shifts to my portfolio and sold off most canadian equities; started investing heavily in bullion, but ignored crypto due to the spike in prices.
2018 - It was very clear that Canada had a limited lifespan left. I predicted it would be about 10-20 years before our quality of life would decline to a standard of, for example, Mexico. This was no issue as I was making good money, and saving well. I still had like 10-15% CAD assets.
2019 - Continued the same gradual decline noticed in 2017-2018, becoming increasingly more pessimistic.
2020 - By early 2020, I was constantly seeking out other countries to move to where I could work (i'm a lawyer) and doing cost benefit analysis. By June, seeing how we were handling covid, my 10-20 year horizon for a collapse got pushed up to 1-5 years, and it became clear that there was simply no other alternative. By March i had sold all canadian assets. From March-June I maxed out all loans available to me and used this to buy mostly cryptocurrency and foreign equities. on the assumption that the CAD would eventually inflate to nothing.
By November, I am putting all my money in crypto, while constantly researching the best countries to buy investment properties in, with the hope of potentially buying citizenship. I had taken steps to open a bank account in a tax haven, but hadn't moved anything over yet.
Early 2021 - Waiting for fucking travel restrictions to end so I can buy investment properties in certain countries. My paycheque instantly gets converted to crypto, and I only use CAD for my immediate expenses.
By mid 2021 there should be a break in travel restrictions so i can finally open my tax haven acct, as well as buy 1 or 2 properties abroad. I intend on continuing to invest in crypto, while buying foreign properties, for as long as possible until A: currency deflates to nothing or B: Rapid increase in tax rates. Both of these have the effect of eroding savings and making it impossible to get ahead, so by that point, I hope to have enough foreign capital that I can book a one way flight out of this shithole country.
And that is my plan. I plan on leaving, because unlike many users in this forum, I realize that this is hopeless and the only good thing you can do is leave.
Sometime around 2000.
In school trying to answer the question, "What makes us Canadians? What's our culture?"
Literally the only answer is "Tim Hortons"
I found that very sad.
You’re wrong. Our culture is “not American, we have healthcare”
"We are like Americans but only better without the guns LOLOLOLOLOL"
they can't even make a coffee properly
They used to; I can't put my finger on what changed.
If I recall they cut costs by dumping their coffee supplier to a cheaper one (and McD's picked it up).
That's right. Tim's started going downhill fast once Burger King bought them out.

Your rage will be your downfall.
When the first trudeau was elected for the last time. I think it was 1980, first time I was of voting age.
PS- I have NEVER voted for one of those.
Thank you for not voting for him gramps
2001, 911.
Things, people, work, etc. began to radically change after 911. It was like flicking a switch, it was that noticeable for me.
2 other noticeable shifts also happened. One in 1986, when many jobs were lost, people moved away etc. and (obviously) 2016 with Trump.
I guess I'm on on a 15 year cycle.
