The shift in power was from the private sector unionist faction to the urban progressive faction. Given the general decline of private sector unions this shift was inevitable. The problem now is that there's still a large percentage of boomers that haven't caught on to the change and will continue to vote NDP because "they stand for the working class".
I disagree. There is a stark difference between the old school, blue collar socialists and the modern soyboys that just want free gibs and push degeneracy.
Remember, the NDP was taken over by Social Marxists back when Tom Mulcair was booted as leader.

The predecessor of the NDP was the CCF, which was founded by Socialists. They were always Socialists. There was no take over.

I could say this about any political party in Canada.
NDP are just more open about it nowadays than before.
