I am being pushed and watched by these 22 years old full time job gym receptionists enforcing this stupid ass new rule.. You have to wear the mask at all time at the gym, including when you are running on the treadmill.

I started working out at an econofitness and they require you to wear a mask at all times, now I thought surely it can't be that bad right?
I started with doing hack squats, deep, slow and controlled reps for sets of 10 and honestly felt like I was trying to breathe through a pillow. I looked on reddit and people from last year were saying how it isn't that bad.
I think they might not have been pushing themselves hard enough or they were simply lying. My trouble breathing was only really a problem for the compound lifts I had done which were the hack squat and romanian deadlift.
And it only got worse as I continued on as I sweated profusely and the mask became saturated with my sweat, which I presume made it even more suffocating.
After I finished my workout my lungs felt like they received more of a workout than my muscles. If I worked out without a mask I would have probably still had a hard time breathing due to exertion, but not because my body was being deprived of oxygen it so desperately needed for a high-intensity workout.
Absolutely awful experience would not recommend working out HARD with anything hampering your breathing. If you do go to the gym and just go to kinda get the blood flowing without even breaking a sweat you'll probably be fine.
I think this is the answer. I've been going to the gym for a dozen years and there is no way I'm able to run or high rep squats with a mask on. I tried to do sprints yesterday (with a one layer mask) and and I almost collapsed. The rules are changing next monday so I'll just skip it until then and use the home gym like I did for the last months, but the regulations are fucking stupid regardless.
Cancel your membership and make a home gym. If you have friends/family who have equipment ask to set-up workout days with them. Use nature. Find other ways.
I am in Quebec. Mine doesnt require this, only in between machines or when walking around in common areas. Still sweaty and gross but at least its not unsafe like working out in a mask is.

I'm not going back to the gym until the masks are not required. It's shitty enough walking around with one on, no way in hell I am wearing one while huffing and puffing lifting weights. My regular gym is so backed up from limited capacity and the fact that they sanitize every single weight plate when your done......fucking absurd.
Oh well. It's been over a year since I have been in a gym and I have actually seen better results by just rocking pushups/chinups/dips and doing weighted versions.
I am considering this. I have already voiced my disagreement with the measures but I don't have high hopes for it to change.
I was thinking cutting the layers of a mask and poking some holes so it doesn't feel like I'm breathing in a brown bag while working out. What do you suggest?
Update: I cut a three-layer mask and it feels more "normal" to breathe through now. I'll probably just use this everywhere too
