just because a cop accuses you of something and a court finds you guilty doesn't mean you did the crime.

And if you need an example of how the legislation is set up to funnel people into it - first consider that many prisons are private and make the most profit by being at max capacity. This leads to longer sentences, especially for those of colour for the same crime, and also stricter sentencing and policing to begin with. But consider that cocaine and crack cocaine are chemically the same substance - the only difference is that crack is distributed to primarily black people (cough by the cia) and cocaine is a white dude's drug. There's a 1x100 sentencing disparity between the substances with mandatory minimum sentencing for low level crack offenses.

In 2003, whites constituted 7.8% and African Americans constituted more than 80% of the defendants sentenced under the harsh federal crack cocaine laws, despite the fact that more than 66% of crack cocaineusers in the United States are white or Hispanic.
