What is it that makes Texas so great?
I did a search on areavibes.com and saw mostly Texan communities ranked as the best in the US.
I live in BC. It’s so expensive here, and though we seem to have lots of promise we are forever shooting ourselves in the foot. Roads are terrible, schools are “woke” making Christian families like mine feel we’d better keep silent if we know what’s good for us, and apathy is like a warm blanket slowly suffocating us.
I want to make BC great. We never have been. Not even sure who to read or follow.
Oh man, where to start? Perhaps at the beginning...
-Texas was scratched out and fought over by settlers looking to make something of their own out of the great frontier. This is decidedly very American in general, but the way early Texans had to bootstrap their own defense while trying to raise farm and family made it pretty unique, and the "Come And Take It" attitude is still very much alive.
-Texans love good food and good manners, but aren't afraid to thump your skull if you step out of line. Very soy free.
-Speaking of food, the BBQ is the best in the country. Known for dry rub, mesquite smoked, and in particular brisket. The idea is that if you have to slather your meat in sauce then you either have poor meat quality or you don't know how to BBQ correctly. Brisket is traditionally very tough and dry (think stews and pot roast), so if you're able to turn that into delicious, smoky, moist BBQ then you're doing something right. Apart from that, TexMex (Americanized Mexican) is great all over the state.
-We have our own power grid, and we have one of two oil refinery locations in the US. If shit really went down, then Texas could realistically stand on its own. Did I mention "Come And Take It"?
-Despite the 10 gallon hat caricature, Texas has the 4th largest (Houston), 7th largest (San Antonio), 9th largest (Dallas), and 13th largest (Austin) cities in the country.
-Lots of other stuff. Come on down and see for yourself.
I did! Two years ago. Flew in to Dallas, drove to Waco (saw the Magnolia folks), Houston (my favorite), Austin (alright, bit dirty, like here), San Antonio (I get what the whole Alamo thing was about now. Hope you folks protect it from the vandals), back through Waco (took in a Steven Curtis Chapman concert) then home from Dallas.
When we landed back in Seattle to drive home to BC, we were struck how much Seattle has fallen. Used to be a clean city. Now there’s graffiti, homeless camps, and garbage everywhere. The contrast from being in Texas to back in the Pacific Northwest was stark.
People in Texas very friendly. Didn’t feel like a freak for being a Christian like I do here in BC. The BBQ is amazing. Your roads and bridges were amazing (everything was like 20 minutes away). Houston has NASA. Love, love, LOVE the state of Texas. So much different than Washington and Oregon.
I’d be back there now for summer if it were not for COVID.
Arkansan here. We're one of Texas's little brothers but if you tell them I said that I'll tell my big bro to beat you up.
Texas is good because of three things:
Money - the Texas oil boom produced a lot of new money and drew in a lot of old money.
Space. People generally don't live on top of each other which makes getting along a lot easier. It also preserves conservatism by eroding groupthink. Houston is the least dense city over a certain size in the world I think. Definitely in the country.
Christianity and its values remain strong. In part because the space allows people to think for themselves so they aren't mocked into disbelieving what the crowd wants them to disbelieve. Whether you believe it Christ or not, there's no question that the system His religion created works.
We love our brothers and sisters in Arkansas. We are also keeping an eye out for who will be yalls next governor. Here's hoping friend!
