...I just happen to own a phone that doesn't support the emergency alert system.
The same precedent has existed in every majority government, pretty much.
I think they have to pass a bill rather than a motion. I'm not an expert on parliamentary procedure, but read the document - this is clearly not a law.
I think that's accurate.
Guys. It's a motion, not a law. It's a near-unanimous vote to SAY "hey, we shouldn't have an election until after the pandemic." There is no force of law here. It is political posturing, nothing more. Elections have not been abolished yet.
This reads to me like it's just a statement, like a UN Resolution. "Parliament says that the government has a responsibility to avoid triggering an election during the pandemic." Doesn't seem to actually have the force of law behind it.
They never actually took it away; he introduced a motion to take away MPP salaries, some Ford legislative chief introduced a motion to take away Baber's, as a smartass retort. Neither actually got voted on AFAIK.
If you are in Hillier or Baber's ridings, you vote for them. Those are former Conservative MPPs who came out against the lockdowns, and Ford kicked them out of the party for it.
If you live in any other riding: make it clear to your MPP that they come out against the lockdowns, right now, or you will be looking for a candidate to the right of them.
You might respond with "well that candidate isn't going to win so I'll just end up with Liberal or NDP" - and you're probably right. But that won't be meaningfully worse than the current situation, and if you're dissatisfied with what you can get at the ballot box, well - then you'll have to look elsewhere for a solution.
Sufficiently advanced satire is indistinguishable from sincerity :)
Never spoil your ballot. Doing so is interpreted as "this guy is too dumb to fill out a ballot properly."
You want to check on the Declined ballot process for the particular election.
Elected officials don't direct the police? Bullshit. They can hire and fire the police chief, who does direct the police.
