I think that at some point, the West and Russia will have to put their current differences aside and work together in order to contain the Chinese threat. As you said, China is rising as a superpower, with Russia relegated to being a regional one, which means that they will have a common enemy with the West. I think that the historical perception of Russia as a superpower means that they aren't going to accept playing junior partner in a coalition with the Chinese, they would rather fight as equals with the West.
I don't think that Russia will align with NATO countries, especially since a bunch of Eastern European NATO countries absolutely hate Russia. They will be a "strategic partner" of China and they will do what China wants.
Yeah, the fate of Eastern Europe is a major issue (now and probably in the future as well). I can potentially see something similar to how it was in WWII where the West and Soviets worked together because they had, not because they really wanted to. I guess we will see over the next couple of decades.
